Experimental facility

An experimental facility is a piece of equipment used for obtaining basic parameters, for instance a scale is an experimental facility. The experimental facility is normally situated in a laboratory and is very often operated with less than a few grams of material. Furthermore, is the experimental facility characterised by, that it does not have to look or operate like a production facility, which means that a very broad range of solutions are available for the design of the experimental facility.

Pilot plant facility

A pilot plant is used to investigate pitfalls before you are building your production facility, hence the pilot plant is a small-scale replicate of the whole production line or critical parts of it. For this reason, the degree of automation is often low compared to a production facility and the pilot plant must be run by skilled people. The amount of material required for pilot plant tests is highly plant specific but is normally less than 1 ton, if the pilot plant is constructed right.

A production facility is producing a commodity in large scale and depending on the commodity the production facility might operate nonstop all year round. The amount of material processed in a production facility can be up to hundreds of tons per hour. Due to the large amounts of material and many hours of operation it pays off to introduce a high degree of automation and to optimize the production facility regarding to material and energy consumption.

    Pilot plant rotary kiln

    Design of a pilot plant rotary kiln for the studying of calcination processes. It should be possible to adjust the material residence time and the kiln should be able to operate with a throughput of up to 10 kg of material per hour. In the hot part of the rotary kiln a temperature of up to 1000 °C is required.
